Cantilever Lumber Storage Racks: Planning a Lumber-Yard Layout

Cantilever racks provide open-front storage for long materials such as lumber. A useful lumber-yard layout starts with the stock lengths, bundle weights, picking method and exposure to weather. Rack dimensions should follow that information, rather than treating every lumber bundle as interchangeable.

Build a stock profile

List the lengths and bundle sizes handled regularly, then identify the occasional items that still need accommodation. Record the heaviest load in each storage position and how the load changes when material is picked from an opened bundle. Include the method used to keep material organized and supported.

Separate high-frequency stock from slow-moving lengths in the layout exercise. The storage objective is not simply to fit the greatest number of bundles into a drawing. Operators also need to identify, reach and retrieve material without unnecessary reshuffling.

Match the supports to the material

Long stock needs a support arrangement suited to its stiffness and length. Ask the rack supplier to review support quantity, spacing and arm selection against the load information. There is no single support spacing that works for every lumber product and bundle.

Resolve outdoor requirements early

Outdoor storage needs a discussion about finish, the support surface, drainage and local exposure. If covered storage is needed, discuss a designed rack-supported roofing arrangement rather than adding a canopy to a rack after purchase.

Can one rack hold different lumber lengths?

Should I order the roof later?

Discuss it during design if covered storage is anticipated. It can affect the overall structural and site requirements.
