Industrial Pipe Storage Racks: Cantilever Planning for Tube and Bar

Cantilever racks can provide accessible storage for long pipe, tube and bar stock. The design needs the material's length, weight, bundle shape and support requirements. Round or irregular items also require an appropriate retention and handling plan; the open front of a rack does not remove the need to control the load.

Describe both bundled and opened stock

Record the dimensions and maximum weight of full bundles. Then describe how stock is picked after bands or packaging are opened. Individual pipes can move differently from a secured bundle, and mixed lengths can leave some pieces with a different support arrangement.

Include the shortest stock that will remain in a location as material is consumed. A support layout suitable for the original bundle may not suit every offcut or remaining piece. Establish where those shorter items should be stored rather than improvising a position on the same rack.

Select arms and retention with the supplier

Ask for the approved arm length, support spacing and column configuration. Retention features are part of the storage arrangement, but they do not increase the rated load or correct unsuitable support. The entire system must fit the materials being stored.

Keep the picking method visible in the layout

Show the handling equipment and the load's travel envelope on the plan. Consider how a bundle is approached, lifted and withdrawn. Access that looks adequate around an empty rack can be inadequate once long material is present.

Make the load schedule usable

Label the intended stock families and approved load limits in a way the warehouse team can use. Keep the capacity information tied to the actual rack and configuration. When new material is introduced, review its dimensions and weight before treating it as equivalent to existing stock.

Retain drawings and installation records for maintenance and future changes. Report damaged arms, columns, bases or connections through the site process. Replacing a component requires the correct specification, not merely a part of similar appearance.

Questions buyers ask

Are stopper pins load-capacity upgrades?

No. They are accessories for the approved storage arrangement and do not increase the rack's rated capacity.

Can short offcuts stay in the same rack position?

Only if the support and storage arrangement is appropriate for them. Plan separately for lengths that no longer fit the intended supports.

Is there one standard arm spacing for pipe?

No. Material length, stiffness, bundle configuration and loading requirements govern the support layout.
